RJW Connects with Kenneth Cole Reaction

RJW Collective is proud to announce its latest campaign for Kenneth Cole Reaction: Connected fragrance. Entitled Connecting 101, the campaign seamlessly integrates original web content starring Vice Magazine co-founder Gavin McInnes, a dedicated microsite and mobile site, seeded social memes, experiential activations and influencer outreach.

The campaign positions, in a new and provocative way, the Connected fragrance and Kenneth Cole Reaction at large as a brand that understands its consumer and how they interact with brands. RJW created the campaign to establish Connected as the tool that helps guys find both their personal identity and social persona. The goal of the campaign was to show how the fragrance instills confidence in its wearer and enables them to become true tastemakers in their social circles, not simply by transforming the way they smell, but by providing the connected man with the social guide that allows him to establish his place as a man who understands sociability and as a man at the forefront of the cultural zeitgeist.

The campaign has quickly garnered the attention in the marketing world, including write-ups in AdWeek and MarketWatch. The first two video of the series have already been released with three more to follow in the coming weeks. If you’re a fan of clever marketing, or need some help in your dating life, watch the video above or check out ReactionConnected.com, and learn from Connecting 101: A Guide to Closing the Deal.

The White Stripes Have Broken Up. Again.

We know, we know. We're a little behind the ball on this.

Still, it's fairly major news.

When Jack White and Meg White dissolved their marriage in 2002, many surmised that the band would not be able to make it. They proved us wrong for another 8 years, but now, at long last, it seems the iconic rock-n-roll duo will call it quits. According to their website, the duo is breaking up “to preserve What is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.”

Some have quipped that the White Stripes were never worthy of the praise and attention they garnered in the first place, but that was of little importance then and is of even less importance now. Regardless of which side of the issue you fell on, they were huge successes in their heyday, with each of their final three records winning the Grammy for Best Alternative Album and their hit song “Seven Nation Army” winning the Grammy for Best Rock Song.

Personally, I was never bothered by the simplicity of their music. White’s riffs, while they never dazzled or befuddled, were always catchy. While not entirely unique--in fact, they were almost always pieced together from borrowed musical movements and icons--they still managed to capture a zeitgeist and enchant an audience. Elson’s simple drum beats were also never revered for their complexity, but isn’t that what made The White Stripes so impressive? As an amateur drummer, (and by amateur, I mean very amateur), I could always put on a White Stripes song and quickly pick up on the beats. It made me feel like I could perhaps one day be a real live rock star (just because it hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean it won’t, people. Don’t be a dreamkiller).

In any case, for me, it’s a sad day. The White Stripes will always be part of a musical movement for me—the movement I discovered in High School.

I’ll leave you with this, from the band itself:

“The White Stripes do no believe to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”

You’re welcome, White Stripes. You. Are. Welcome.

Be there or be square.

Mac OS X App Store

First things first, the Mac OS X app store that was announced at the October 20 keynote is rumored to launch on December 13, 2010, several days ahead of schedule.

Apart from the backlash Apple has received for its strict content-policing on the iPhone platform, there is speculation of the same happening on the desktop. Steve Jobs has personally assured that apps that do not wish to be a part of the app store can still be installed. What implications this may have is still up in the air.

Apple has learned its lesson from the iPhone app store and will work hard to "ensure quality over quantity" in the upcoming app store. Furthermore, a bigger  question looms over indie developers who decide to bypass the app store. Will Apple put pressure on them to participate or put measures in place to sideline them? What will be the extent of content policing?

Come December 13, we shall see.

RJW Launches Original MOONSHINE

MoonshineRJW is excited to announce the launch of some projects we've been working on with Original MOONSHINE, a new clear corn whiskey that is distilled four times in a Prohibition-era copper pot still. This spirit is hand-crafted in the same authentic way that moonshine has been made for hundreds of years, which we think is pretty cool.

RJW created two new digital spaces for Original MOONSHINE: Check out Moonshine.com and then head over to the Original MOONSHINE blog for a taste of Original MOONSHINE culture and life during Prohibition era.

Follow Original MOONSHINE on Twitter and become a fan on Facebook. We're also looking for some Original Shiners who are irreverent, versatile, and mix well with everything. If you want to spread the SHINE (and have the chance to gain access to some of our private speakeasies), let us know.

Goodbye Walkman!

Sony has announced it has finally retired the Walkman cassette tape player, marking the end of one of the most successful consumer gadgets of all time.

By today's standards, the Walkman was clunky. The plastic tape player required frequent replacing of two AA batteries. There was no shuffle. There was no storage to speak of. It could play only the number of songs on the tape. Jumping to a new song tasked an owner with fast-forwarding, an inexact process that meant repeated stops to find the start of the desired tune.
But until July 1, 1979, the day the Walkman went on sale in Japan, people had no concept of portable music--not the kind that Sony offered. Until that day, portable music mostly meant holding a transistor radio up to your ear.

Of Plurality (and Smartphones)

And adding to the sheer multiplicity of smartphones is Microsoft's very own, Windows Phone 7.
The seventh iteration of Microsoft's mobile OS is a complete rewrite of the legacy (and stopgapped) 6.5 OS and to what results!
The UI is a refreshing digression from the 4 x 4 grid of icons that we are so used to seeing. It is an evolution of the Zune UI with panoramic scrolling and cropped-off text that Microsoft lovingly refers to as the "Metro" UI.

Hubs and Xbox Live integration (yes, thats true! Xbox Live is on the Windows Phone 7) are features that are been used as key selling points. Microsoft's Office suite is also integrated into the OS; this includes Sharepoint, Outlook and Word/Powerpoint with Exchange support.

Microsoft officially announced this today and you can follow the live blog recap on Engadget

This might change everything. Again.
